(Or maybe George).

Anyhow, I love the juxtaposition of these two headlines in Yahoo! News today:
Bush Seeks Better Ties In Latin America

New Mexico Makes The Bolo The Official State Tie
Apart from the obvious (and amusing only to me . . . and maybe George) connection of "tie" (the tie between ties?), there's the New Mexico-Mexico thing. And then of course we've got the selection of a particularly Latin object as the official something of a state that borders Latin America, and . . .

Ohhhhh, if you like this sort of thing you can extend the conceit yourself. And if you don't like it, you probably stopped reading already.

(Man, I'm goofy sometimes.)

The mind of Mike must be a strange place to be.

Love the post labels, though.

I wouldn't go there if I didn't have to.

small point. very small. it's a bola tie. it has been "the official neckwear" of arizona for a long time now. new mexicans are a backward lot, texans still go for those stringy thingies. but the bola shows the spirit of the true west.

bolos are the weighted spinny gizmos that the grouchos in argentina use to trip up cows.

I don't know whether to be flattered or insulted.

I guess I'll just have to tie one on to figure it all out. Good thing I posted about mojitos on my blog today.

Minstrel -

At least it was the AP that got it wrong. I'm only copying what they said.

grouchos in argentina use to trip up cows

Intentional, or typo?

George -

Intended as a compliment. But since we agree that a good pun deserves a groan and not a laugh, maybe a little insult in the flattery is appropriate.

Let's say that neither flattery nor insult wins. Call it a tie.

intentional, for about a year in vegas there was a specialty act from argentina. it used to bug them when we'd call them grouchos. one night they were waiting in the wings to go on and one of them noticed that everybody in the orchestra was wearing the glasses and nose combos. then they all started cracking up. their part of the show that night when downhill from there.

Picking on the Argentines, huh? Don't cry for me, Freedonia, or something like that.
